Reading BURNOUT evoked a feeling I’d rather not revisit: when I go to my beloved daughters’ dance recitals, there’s a particular teacher who thinks it’s a great idea to put 12-year-old girls in Hoochie-mama hot-pants and have them shake it all around inappropriately to hip-hop music. (Sadly I’ve been to enough dance competitions to know this instructor is no island unto herself.) BURNOUT, part of DC’s tweener-targeted Minx line, is a superficial stroll through the issues of alcoholism, domestic abuse, and eco-terrorism.  What puts it over the top, though, is the lead character’s hipster best friend’s propensity to talk about her tits and encourage her bandmates to suck on ‘em while lifting her shirt during practice. Hey, I’m no prude, but do I want the target audience within a mile of this one? Um, no? This one reads like a very special SAVED BY THE BELL (original cast) without the laugh track. Have your daughters and sisters check out Minx’s vastly superior PLAIN JANES or GOOD AS LILY instead.
