I’d never heard of this book before ordering it, but the eye-popping cover piqued my curiosity. There was no hype on the Internet prior, no interviews with the creator on any of the Web sites I frequent (I’m referring to COMIC Web sites, you pervs), so I went into this one with no preconceived notions or ideas–a pretty rare occurrence. Fishtown tells the true-ish tale of a group of teens in Philadelphia arrested for murdering a peer. It’s pretty unflinching and unsentimental, not the kind of thing I’d recommend if you’re in the mood for a gentle romp.  But it’s also very effective. As soon as your eyes get used to the stark two-color printing, you’re jolted into the moment with the introduction of an ominous third color. That might sound a little strange, but you’ll understand when you read the book. Which you should, if you enjoyed Fincher’s Zodiac or HBO’s The Wire. Kevin Colden is definitely a voice to watch in the world of comics; it’s a rare treat to encounter a creator who pares everything down to the bare essentials, making it cut that much deeper. Fishtown is going to stick with me for a while.
