When a crisis arises, people have to pull together in order to get help from other people in the community.  Civic-minded concertgoers will look forward to Buck the System, a charitable event subtitled “a night of music, hair, and fashion to declare war on cancer” in support of local resident Buck Charlton.

Buck the System originated when Sabrina Shell of Nesbit Salon asked if there was something the salon could do as a fundraiser to combat cancer. Melissa Bryant of Nesbit had just found out her friend Buck Charlton had been diagnosed with stage four colon cancer, so Bryant and the rest of the staff decided to try raising funds for Charlton who is a recognizable name and face in the Richmond area.

Now you can support Charlton and join him and his friends at the downtown Richmond location of Capital Ale House on Sunday. All proceeds from the door go to Charlton to help with his medical expenses and a new and experimental surgical procedure that his insurance company may not cover.

The unconventional surgical procedure could be Charlton’s only cure instead of undergoing a revolving door of treatments, sickness, and remission. “Here I am sitting at age 47 with insurance having a benefit for myself when some of the people who are coming to support me haven’t been insured for years,” Charlton said.

Charlton also wanted to thank Nesbit Salon, Capital Ale House, Alfaparf Milano, Heidi Story, The Phoenix, Boris Churashev, Nick Sullivan and everyone else who has made the Buck the System event possible.

Live music will be provided by Tammi Kamin and Bill Hill, the Silverbacks, TalleyHillGoreStone and the Ill Billys. There will also be a fashion show and other exciting giveaways to those who come out in support, but supplies are limited, so get there early!

“I want people to be aware of the devastation [cancer] can cause, not just with the cancer patient but [with] the domino effect it has on the family and so on,” Bryant said.

At any rate, Charlton and Bryant are ready for Buck the System. “Is there anything wine, women, and music can’t cure?” Charlton asked.
