Tell people you belong to the Quoit Club and you might get a few---or many---blank stares.  What’s quoit? A kinky perversion? A lost language? A funky dance? A rare delicacy? An obscure Olympian sport?

The last answer is closest to the truth. A precursor to today’s game of horseshoes, quoits was fancied by luminaries in Richmond’s past, including a governor and Chief Justice John Marshall. The game inspired the formation of a 19th-century sporting club. The club’s protocols forbade discussion of controversial topics like politics or religion. Activity was all about the sport, the beverages (juleps and rum), and the camaraderie.

Today’s club has a membership dedicated to preserving the extraordinary heritage of Richmond’s architectural and historical sites. Historic Richmond Foundation’s Quoit Club invites people to experience a visit to the unique structures and locations.

Communications Chair Brian Bald commented “the Quoit Club is the social arm of the Historic Richmond Foundation that brings young professionals, history buffs, etcetera together once a month from September to May to tour historic sites around town, have a few drinks, and socialize with other club members.”

He added that some tours are set for the upcoming year and that others will be finalized over the coming weeks.

The Quoit Club will host a social and membership drive on Thursday, August 21, 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Blackfin, 1001 Haxall Point, Suite 100.
