Most people of my generation can, when prompted, hum or sing their way through the theme from Nintendo’s Mario Brothers. While that simple “doot doot doo” may be indelibly branded on the children of the ’80s, video game music has come a long way since those days. Games feature orchestral and popular music, and most games have soundtracks that fans can listen to when they’re not playing. It was in tribute to this growth that Video Games Live was born.

For several years now, live orchestral performances of video game music have become a popular event, and this month our own Richmond Symphony is bringing just such a show to life. The one-day event will be on April 25 at the Landmark Theater.

Think the symphony is not for you? Video Games Live may be the show to change your mind. The performance includes not only orchestral and choral performances, but also lighting effects, electronic sound accompaniment, and special video footage. There are even interactive segments, for what tribute to video games would be complete without some audience participation?

While the orchestral music used in some of today’s video games may be the most obvious choice for such a performance, Video Games Live doesn’t ignore its humble beginnings. Music featured in the show will represent over 50 different games, from classics Mario, Tron, and Pac-Man to later releases such as Castlevania and Final Fantasy, all the way up to recent favorites Bioshock, God of War, and even Guitar Hero. Personally, I can’t wait to hear what they’ve selected from Earthworm Jim.

Early arrivals will be treated to game demos, give-aways, a meet-and-greet with some of the industry’s top designers and composers, and a costume competition. Hmm…I wonder where I can find a big pink ballgown and a blonde wig on such short notice?
