Even if you can’t pull off haute couture, a classy t-shirt can still make you look hot. A simple tee can serve as the focal point for many outfits and even double as a billboard for everything from clever advertising slogans to classic pop cultural icons.
But what do you do when the messages that usually appear on t-shirts don’t communicate your mood and mental state to the rest of the world?
Enrique Pascal is the co-owner and principal designer of Enrique Pierre Clothing, a boutique t-shirt line aimed at women. The line’s slogan is “When women speak, we listen,” and the concept behind Pascal’s line is the empowerment of women with the positive messages emblazoned on the front of the shirts.
Along with his business partner Patrick Pierre-Lewis, Pascal previously promoted parties for the music industry, but the pair switched their focus and released the t-shirt line in 2004. Pascal is from Brooklyn, New York and Pierre-Lewis is from Queens, New York, and even though the line is based locally in Richmond, Pascal says his client base is international.
“We’re international because of the online store,” Pascal said. “We’ve had orders from as far away as the Netherlands.”
Pascal was inspired to create the line when he saw lots of teenagers wearing tees, hoodies and other casual apparel covered in skulls and other symbols of death and despair when that trend gained prominence.
“There has to be a balance, and not everyone is into skulls and negative images, and some people want to portray something positive,” Pascal said. “I’m traveling in the other direction, and our t-shirts speak for you without you having to say a word.”
The shirts include trendy yet timeless slogans such as “I Am the Bomb,” “No Monkey Business Here,” “You Are Now Rocking with the Best” and “When God Made Me, He Took His Time,” among others.
Not only are Pascal’s shirts feminine and fashionable, but they are also functional.
Enrique Pierre tees include a slightly scooped neck and shorter sleeves that create a fashionable silhouette. Accordingly, they can be worn with almost any attire.
Still, shirts with nifty slogans don’t make a clothing line unless they’re backed up with a strong marketing concept. Therefore, Pascal decided to hit the streets of Richmond with a multicultural troupe of models to make sure that everyone could get behind the concept he was trying to bring to the forefront.
It appears that the t-shirts are garnering a positive response from his customers. One of Pascal’s customers wrote him an e-mail to tell him that wearing an Enrique Pierre t-shirt garnered her positive attention when she was approached on the street.
Many women receive catcalls and come-ons from eager guys they encounter while walking down the street, but because she was wearing an Enrique Pierre tee, the guy tried to get her attention in the most respectful way he could.
“She said the guy was trying to get her attention, but since he didn’t know her name, he referred to her by what he saw on the shirt she was wearing and called out to her, “Excuse me, ‘Strong and Beautiful!’” Pascal said.
A single garment doesn’t often inspire a change in behavior, but if the current success of Enrique Pierre Clothing is any indication, women are crying out for something different to display across their chests.
