If you’ve been playing videogames for over twenty years like I have, you know Sega was once a company whose name was synonymous with gaming.  From making Sonic the Hedgehog a household name with its Genesis system in the 1990s to creating numerous arcade hits, Sega is arguably second to Nintendo in terms of recognizable classic videogame icons.

Sega Superstars Tennis is a bright and colorful tennis game featuring some of the company’s best known icons.  Expect appearances from Sonic and friends and even characters from more obscure franchises including Jet Set Radio, NiGHTS, Samba De Amigo and Space Channel 5.

But make no mistake – the mind-numbing difficulty found in this game’s later stages proves that it isn’t necessarily a game aimed at kids.  While not as deep as Sega’s other tennis simulation Virtua
Tennis 3, the addictive challenge mode in Superstars Tennis will keep you up late at night as you attempt to unlock dozens of extras including new characters, courts and mini-games.

And if you do get frustrated with the challenge mode, there’s always multiplayer.  As one might expect, the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 versions include better graphics and the Wii version has those nifty motion-based controls that everyone seems to go ga-ga over these days.

– Sega Superstars Tennis is available now for the DS, PlayStation 2, PlayStation 3, Wii and Xbox 360.
