Lots of video games let players build and control their own societies, but Bethesda Softworks, the developer behind The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, asks gamers to figure out how to survive after America’s destruction in Fallout 3.

In the year 2277, the city of Washington D.C. has become even more of an urban wasteland than it was in 2008, and as a drifter who awakens in a fallout shelter, it’s your job to find out who set the nuclear bomb that destroyed civilization.

Whereas the original Fallout games were role-playing titles, Fallout 3 is a first-person action title with an unrelated story. The game include role-playing elements, and its unpredictable setting and the size of the game’s world differentiate Fallout 3 from other first-person shooters and keeps players wondering what will happen next.

For instance, encounters with background characters include dialogue trees with negative and positive responses. Those characters will react according to your answers and your actions, so it’s best to ask questions first and shoot later.

Fallout 3 also includes some of the most detailed graphics I’ve ever seen in a console video game. The deformed landscape is just as rugged and weathered as you might expect it to look after a nuclear disaster, and the portrayals of humans, mutants and rabid animals are dead-on.

With dozens of side quests and weapons and the option to freely roam the terrain, you’ll play this one until doomsday. Fallout 3 is available for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 for $59.99.
