The other night, I dreamed that my own skin had been replaced with crocheted material. Maybe that was because I like to snuggle up under mountains of blankets in the fall, but more likely, it was due to the infectiousness of playing Sony’s and Media Molecule’s new PlayStation 3 video game, LittleBigPlanet.

The game’s main character is Sackboy, a cute mascot with crocheted skin who’s just likeable enough to get this game into the hands of kids and female gamers who may not otherwise be convinced about buying a PS3. And if Sony doesn’t pimp the little guy by putting him on a slew of merchandise, I’ll drive a knitting needle through my forehead.

Ask any player what the point of LittleBigPlanet is, and you’ll likely get dozens of different answers. Upon first glance, it appears to be just a simple platformer with three dimensional characters set in a two dimensional space, but it’s much more than that.

Sackboy can only jump and grab onto objects, so the game is also a puzzler where you have to figure out how to use the environment to get across the levels. Each level only has one true objective, but they never get tedious.

LittleBigPlanet also includes an extensive level editor where you can use the set pieces to create your own environments, play them and share them with others over the PlayStation Network.
Even if you’re too lazy to mess around with the creation features, the game play is still highly addictive. You can customize your Sackboy with new skins and decorate your area with various stickers hidden within the single-player levels.

LittleBigPlanet is available for the PlayStation 3 for $59.99.
