If you owned a home in Silent Hill, the fictional town where demonic creatures openly roam the streets, you’d pray for foreclosure. Konami has finally backed its survival horror video game series into the darkest corner of the next generation with Silent Hill: Homecoming.

After five main games in the series and a feature film, what’s left to run from in the world’s eeriest town? Well, the newest installment is all about atmosphere, and Homecoming brings it by the bloody bucket load.

Alex Shepherd, a war veteran, begins the game strapped to an operating table. Shepherd soon discovers that his younger brother Joshua is imprisoned in a hospital, and he must brave the creepy corridors to rescue him.

American developer Double Helix created Homecoming, but the changes it made to the game play actually improve the overall experience.

The tank-like controls of previous games have been replaced with a more fluid scheme that helps in evading attacks when you’re surrounded by a bevy of busty and disfigured nurses. Environments are exceedingly detailed, down to blood splatters that hit the camera, and a chilling soundtrack rife with shrieks and screams builds tension along the way.

If you like logic puzzles, satisfying combat and deeply disturbing images, Homecoming is the one to play while you wait to scare trick-or-treaters off your porch. Just make sure to crank your television up to the brightest setting.
