Why do classic video games remain popular in an age of graphical realism?  Nostalgia is a huge reason why they’re still in style, but they also provide a decent value for the money.

For instance, Sega’s newest retro anthology, Sonic’s Ultimate Genesis Collection, includes a whopping 40 titles, trumping the game count in Sega’s last two compilations.

Most of the titles debuted on Sega’s 16-bit Genesis home console in the 1990s.  Of course, many of the revered old-school franchises such the Golden Axe, Shinobi and Sonic the Hedgehog series and even lesser known gems such as Comix Zone, Dynamite Headdy and Ristar are included.

Finally, the entire Streets of Rage beat-‘em-up trilogy is available in a Sega compilation for the first time.  Also, the compilation includes role-playing games such as Beyond Oasis and each of the titles in the Phantasy Star and Shining Force series.

By completing specific tasks, trophies and achievements can be unlocked in both the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 versions, respectively.  Also, additional arcade and Sega Master System games become available for play after these awards are won.

Still, the question begs: is Ultimate Genesis Collection really the ultimate Sega compilation?  Well, the disc doesn’t include classic Genesis games based on licensed fare such as Castle of Illusion Starring Mickey Mouse or Michael Jackson’s Moonwalker, but with the sheer wealth of games in the collection, most retro fans will be willing to overlook the absence of a few titles.

Sonic’s Ultimate Genesis Collection is available for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 for $29.99 MSRP.
