What would you do if you had a special ability that suddenly awakened one day? Square-Enix’s The Last Remnant asks gamers this question while giving them a front row seat to view some of the largest-scale battles ever seen in a role-playing video game.
The plot centers on remnants, legendary relics that grant its wielders unique powers and spark off international conflicts within the game’s fictional world.
When soldiers kidnap his sister Irina, the remnant of the game’s protagonist, Rush Sykes’, inadvertently awakens and vaporizes most of her captors. Although he fails to save Irina, Sykes soon discovers that different world factions seek to locate remnants from around the world and control their powers.
Despite his artlessness, Sykes joins an opposing army in order to rescue his sister. In fact, the game’s military theme is what makes it stand out from other strategy role-playing games.
The game’s battles are turn-based, but they focus on military squads executing commands in concert instead of handing those chores over to individual characters. Battles can involve up to 70 enemies at once, so planning strategies in advance is necessary to guarantee success.
Even with the legions of units that appear on the battlefields, the stunning visuals are crisp, vibrant and detailed.
Sadly, the constant loading from the disc makes the animation freeze or drag at times during battles and cinemas. While this choppiness can be overlooked at times, it becomes terribly distracting during long skirmishes.
If you can look past the animation issues, however, The Last Remnant is a solid entry in the role-playing genre with a refreshing approach to traditional design.
The Last Remnant is available for the Xbox 360 or $59.99 MSRP
