Mixed Media: Romeo Theater
June 27, 2007 12:33 PM

WHAT IS IT?
Richmond videographer John Romeo discovered that creating a virtual screening room made more sense than paying rent on a brick and mortar theater. Each “episode” includes a short film and an even shorter glimpse behind the scenes. He accepts submissions from anyone, but the majority of films on the site were created or co-created by Romeo.

WHAT TO EXPECT?
Super short films (most well under 10 minutes) on a shoestring budget. Submissions range from silly (“Chad Vader: Day Shift Manager” ) to sillier (“Hollywood Goes Viral” ) with lots of just plain ridiculous in between (“Kung Fu Laundry” and assorted cat videos). The majority are shot on digital video with just enough slick editing and smooth polish to elevate them well above and beyond the old “guy with a camcorder” days.

WHAT THEY SAY
Show #11 entitled “Short Pants” was selected as an Official Honoree by the 11th Annual Webby Awards. (The film is a slight “remix” of sorts, an updated edit of a 16mm film shot in 1954 by Romeo’s grandfather, Paul Kimaid.)

WHAT WE SAY
There are a few clunkers in the bunch, derailed by budgetary (and/or thespian) limitations. But overall, Romeo’s persistence and enthusiasm combined with genuine skill and good humor make for some truly inspired moments of online entertainment.
