Without good film options to review this week, I thought a look back at some of my favorite horror films would be in order. What makes these my favorites? It’s a combination of quality suspense, gore and, most important, how much fun these flicks are to watch. Counting down from 10.
10 - Parents A perfect example of psychological horror if there ever was one. Imagine being a kid and discovering your dinner was, in fact, other people. This is the only film to make me want to vomit aside from the Blair Witch Project, but that was due to the need of a steady cam.
9 - Invasion of the Body Snatchers The ’70s version of this film is brilliant. Awesome ending with Donald Sutherland at his finest.
8 - Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors This gets the nod as the film that pushed this series into the gorefest we all know and love. It has some of the most inventive special effects merging the dream world with reality. The writing sucks but that’s not why we watch these films anyway.
7 - Rosemary’s Baby Creepy, creepy, creepy. This is one of the more disturbing films on this list. A great example of letting the viewers’ imaginations fill in the blanks.
6 - Young Frankenstein Yeah, this is a comedy but it meets the fun requirement. An incredible take on this classic monster with Gene Wilder providing an Oscar-worthy performance.
5 - Lost Boys Vampires have always been considered the coolest of undead horror creatures, but this film launched them into a modern era of sweetness. Watch this and tell me you don’t want to be a vampire.
4 - The Exorcist Frightening beyond belief. What makes this so scary is that it’s based on a true story. This one wins the award for best use of pea soup. Now go make your pilgrimage to those famous steps in Georgetown.
3 - Dawn of the Dead One of the few where the original and remake are worthy of taking note. The original because it’s a freakin’ classic. The remake? This revolutionized the zombie genre by turning the walking dead into the running dead. Fast zombies are real, real scary.
2 - Alien Why is this on the list? It’s sci-fi, right? Well, technically it is listed as sci-fi/horror so we’ll allow it. It is a monster movie after all, it just takes place in space. Great story, quality film work.
1 - Evil Dead 2 Awesome flick that has the best replay value of any movie ever made. It has the gore, suspense and comedy to make this the most entertaining horror movie of all time. Forget renting this one. Go buy it. Now. Go on, what are you waiting for?
Have a safe Halloween and keep these films on hand for those too drunk to drive home. With Halloween on Friday this year, I’m sure they’ll come in handy.
Those are indeed classics but I was trying to stay away from anything spawning 5+ sequels (although Alien is pushing it). I did allow Nightmare 3 only for the great scene transitions. Evil Dead? Meh. It was okay but not what Sam Rami really wanted (and lost the rights to in the process). That’s why ED2 was pretty much a remake of the original but told with Rami’s humorous touch. There are new movies worthy of mention but only 10 slots were available. Some movies age like wine. Let’s give the newbies about 10 years…

Where is the original Halloween and Friday the 13th? These are classic horror movies. Even today that mask that Michael wore in Halloween freaks me out. What about the original Evil Dead? And, no new movies on the list…Hostel and Jeepers Creepers are both okay. I like Hostel for the T&A;if nothing else.
