The virtual reality craze is as dead as wearing fanny packs and doing the Macarena, but the concept lives on with today’s video goggles.

By placing an LCD screen in front of each eye, video goggles create the illusion of a big-screen display when a viewer focuses.  Best of all, most goggles include a pair of earbuds that create a booming audio experience to match the visuals.

MyVu calls their goggles personal media viewers (MSRP $199.95), but it’s the same concept.  While one model connects to a diverse array of audiovisual equipment including camcorders, DVD players and cellphones, the other model is specifically designed to connect to Apple’s i-Pod line of products.

For the true technophile, i-glasses’ Video 3D Pro (MSRP $1,299.00) broadcasts an image equivalent to a 70-inch screen with a resolution of 1.44 million pixels.  In any case, the higher the resolution, the higher the price tag, but lots of companies are manufacturing models with lower resolutions on the cheap.

Are video goggles better than buying a huge high-definition setup for your living room?
Until broadcasters discover a way to beam video signals directly into our brains, these goggles are your best bet for a complete sensory viewing experience.  If you’re not afraid of looking like Cyclops from X-Men and possibly stumbling into traffic while wearing them, this is the product for you.
