It’s come to our attention that there was a major error in your recent story regarding the roller derby bout between the River City Rollergirls (Richmond, VA) and the Dominion Derby Girls (Norfolk, VA). THE DOMINION DERBY GIRLS WON, FINAL SCORE 159-26!  Also, there was at least one photo ID’d incorrectly.  (The photo with “T.Rex YaFace” is really of Sweet N. Lowdown.

Dear Jasmine,
Thanks for bringing the mix-up to our attention. Clay was on-site taking notes during the event and gets very distracted by cleavage. I’m sure he just forgot who he was rooting for. Sorry!

Reader Comments:

Thank you for the correction Corinne.  This is something that Roller Derby and the women who play it have to battle constantly.

To Chunky, Women’s Flat Track Roller Derby is being considered to be included in the 2012 Olympics, so it could well be an Olympic Sport in the future.  Broadway Books is where you need to go for girl on girl action, not a Roller Derby event.  Brick is only available at a few Downtown venues, what kind of publicity is that? Especially if it’s incorrect, it’s nothing but bad publicity.

I hope the next time that Brick reports for a River City Rollergirls bout they send someone not so distracted by Cleavage to ensure the accuracy of reporting.

Huh? There was skating going on?
Then why were all the girls wearing lingerie?
I could have sworn there was a stripper pole in the middle of the track. Maybe next time they can install a shower?

You play the role but you take no responsibility for your actions? These sexed up antics have no place in sport. Don’t blame Clay, blame yourselves!

Take it off!!!

Well said worst nightmare!
By the way, I didn’t even know what the “Brick” was until they misrepresented us in this article, so that tells you what their level of plublicity is.

I don’t think that Ms. Milligan was taking herself or her team too serious at all. Corinne, kudos to you for clarifying the information and setting the record straight. It’s far too often that cocky journalism followed with this disrespect for your sport is allowed to happen.

As far as “Chunky Puff” goes...I don’t think that these derby girls should be feeling like someone is doing them a favor by misinforming the public and then slapping them in the face with degrading comments. This is just unsat and sexist at the least.
As far as doing this team a favor with their “level of publicity” goes....I don’t really know that The Brick is some HIGH LEVEL of publicity but if that’s the case, I don’t think this team or the Roller Derby community needs any of their help.

Chunky Puff, please educate yourself...Roller Derby is a sport, not some sideshow entertainment show like the idea you have in your head. It is far too often that these ladies get slapped with the label of entertainment as if they are like World Wrestling Entertainment or something. These are strong women that give countless hours to training themselves to be better at this growing sport. If you had any idea of what they do to make sure this sport happens successfully, you might have an insight as to why they need to make sure that publications like The Brick don’t set them back when they are trying their hardest to move forward. I would invite you to lace up some skates and last 1 hour on the track with these women and their “incredible athleticism” as you so intelligently refer. I would venture to say that you would not last more than a couple jams (if you even know what that is). Do yourself a favor and remain on your couch watching your “girl on girl” action if that’s what you want to see. That’s not what Roller Derby represents in any way, shape or form. Good day!

Actually Chunky Puff, roller derby is a sport.  It just happens to be an entertaining one.  As for your comment about why people go watch roller derby...makes you look ignorant!  So congrats on making a fool of yourself!

Get a sense of humor Corinne.  If you were a real Brick reader, you would understand the response was a joke meant to poke fun at themselves.  You take yourself far too seriously to see it that way.  Roller Derby is entertainment.  It’s not an Olympic sport!  Brick is doing you a favor by even giving you this level of publicity and you want to lash out at them for it?

Why do you think anyone goes to see roller derby anyway? For the score? NO! It isn’t for the incredible athleticism either!  It’s for some awesome girl on girl action!  Thank you Brick!

My name is Corinne Milligan, and I’m the Director of Public Relations for the Dominion Derby Girls. Your response to my fellow league member and friend, Jasmine Facun made me angry on several levels.

First, on a professional level. As a journalist myself, I strive for accuracy in every piece I write. Last month’s bout was clearly a lop-sided victory for the DDG and therefore would have been hard to “get confused” by the final score of 159– 26. The fact that your reporter “got distracted” by the cleavage is not only demeaning, but a total brush-off and disregard for both teams AND the credibility of your paper.

Secondly, I’m not sure you are aware, but these are ATHLETES we’re talking about, not show ponies or Hooters waitresses (with all due respect to those ladies.) The ladies of the DDG and RCRG train hard at least 8 – 10 hours a week MINIMUM. We’re proud of the skill levels we’ve worked toward. PLUS – we work on top of all of that to do the business of the league.

I agree the ladies of the DDG and RCRG are all beautiful, and worth watching. But I invite you to come learn more about these talented women before you dismiss us as “cleavage.”

Thank you for your time.

Corinne Milligan
Proud member of the DDG
