It’s come to our attention that there was a major error in your recent story regarding the roller derby bout between the River City Rollergirls (Richmond, VA) and the Dominion Derby Girls (Norfolk, VA). THE DOMINION DERBY GIRLS WON, FINAL SCORE 159-26!  Also, there was at least one photo ID’d incorrectly.  (The photo with “T.Rex YaFace” is really of Sweet N. Lowdown.

Dear Jasmine,
Thanks for bringing the mix-up to our attention. Clay was on-site taking notes during the event and gets very distracted by cleavage. I’m sure he just forgot who he was rooting for. Sorry!

Too bad.  I honestly wanted to know the answer to my questions and thought I made some vaild points.  A few others made some good points too and never got a response. Tough questions make you run for cover?  You can only respond with venom about cleavage comments?

BTW:  I advise very heavy drinking to start devoloping a sense of humor.  For anyone who takes themselves too seriously and want to learn how to laugh at themselves I advise the study of astronomy and astrophysics to understand how insignificant you are the to the universe.  Then again...giving yourself a wedgie in public would go along way to accomplishing both goals.

I wish you well anyway Media B! : )

No, chunky, you’re just not worth the effort anymore.

/bump guess I got the last word on this?

Clearly there are people who have a sense of humor and then there are others who were tragically born without a sense of humor. Usually the latter group consists of lawyers, bankers, accountants and military dictators.  However, there is a sub group of the born humorless who have self esteem issues and thereby cannot laugh at themselves in any way.

For the record I think these women are incredible athletes. So are WWF and WWE wrestlers.  Does that make Roller Derby a sport?  It’s questionable in the public eye.  Why? Because to the general public who does not know much about RD it’s the same as WWF wrestling or other entertainment type athletic events which are not really a sport.  The names for the women athletes are like WWF names.  Busta Hyman?  That’s an AWESOME name but it lends itself to a random spectator thinking this is entertainment and not a sporting contest.  The women wear skimpy and sexy attire.  Again, this is AWESOME but it doesn’t get people to think of you as a serious sport.  I say either go with it full on and market yourselves as hot girl on girl action and double your ticket prices and get the RD women six figure salaries OR consider changing the image you convey to the general public.  Alas, as only woman can do in our society you insist on having it both ways.  Right?  But back to the sport or not question.

I offer the definition of a sport. Sport: is an activity that is governed by a set of rules or customs and often engaged in competitively. Sports commonly refer to activities where the physical capabilities of the competitor are the sole or primary determiner of the outcome (winning or losing).  I am ASSUMING that Roller Derby is not “fixed” and that a winner or loser is not predetermined.  Would that be correct Derby Women?  If so, then Roller Derby IS a sport.  If not, then it isn’t a sport.  Which is it?

Roller Derby is NOT an Olympic Sport. That is an undisputed fact. My comment was meant only to make a point about someone who has no sense of humor about themselves.  A Brick Editor made a stupid joke poking fun at one of themselves and NOT RD Athletes and the Roller Derby World exploded in bar fight outrage.  The joke wasn’t about you until you made it about you.

I would end this submission by encouraging the RD people to get a sense of humor but I think that would be as pointless as asking a quadriplegic to grow new limbs.

PS: How do I get a date with Busta Hyman?! She’s soooo HOT!

...and I sure would love to see peewee out on the track.  I would take a penalty in a second just to punch what I can only assume is a him in the face.  A shining example of how “ignorance is bliss.”

Umm… chunky puff… roller derby IS going to be an olympic sport.  Thanks for dismissing it as entertainment though, really.  All of us girls who work so damn hard really appreciate our efforts being reduced to tits on skates, or being anywhere near the same ballpark as pro wrestling.  Go to a bout sometime or attempt to hit and take hits on skates and maybe you’ll have some respect for the sport and the awesome ladies who play it.  Or maybe you’re just an idiot and you’ll never get it.  Either way, just please stop talking about things you know nothing about. Have a nice day! smile

well said, Castle. The analogy I would draw would be with “pro” wrestling. There’s no question to the skill and dedication it takes to go out, be at your best and perform well. Where some people get lost is in the pageantry of it all. They get confused by the fact that derby is both a sport AND entertainment. Same can be said about MMA, the NFL, boxing and other major sports.

Before I get jumped (again) by some ranting roller girl I would like to make this formal statement.

I did not make the statement about cleavage nor was I there to watch the derby chicks in action.

Love,
Claybo

Peewee . . . (will not insert obvious joke) you obviously were at a different game.  there was no one in lingerie.

E-bomb, your point is understood.  It’s the other comments that are a problem and show that people don’t take roller derby seriously as a sport.  I just was at a bout this past weekend where a woman broke her leg playing.  So when you see comments like Peewee’s and Chunky’s it’s kinda irritating.

Hmmmm...if you read this again...it sounds like Tod is disparaging Clay with his comment on the fault of being distracted by cleavage. There is nothing here that knocks any of the derby girls and he apologizes for the mix up. Peeps need to chill…
