Brothers, teachers, musicians: James and Christian Mason have a lot in common. The latest thread tying these Richmond-based siblings together is their new album, The Sun, The Moon & The Sea, and they’re celebrating its release with a concert at The Camel tonight, May 8.
The Masons first recorded together on brother James’ 2003 solo album, Carnival Sky. With Christian playing on a few tracks, the album received glowing reviews from all over the country, favorably comparing James to Nick Drake and Elliot Smith (though I would say he’s more earthy than Drake and less somber than Smith, the comparisons are still apt). Now backed by a four-piece band, the brothers share guitar and vocal duties, with Christian adding a touch of that high lonesome on lap steel. Filling out the sound is Mike Reina (Hammond organ), Zak Billmeier (bass), Patrick Strollo (guitar), and Dean Christesen (percussion).
The Sun, The Moon & The Sea is a soundtrack for the soft, sepia-toned memories of aimless afternoon drives, an indie-folk opus of gentle, finger-picked acoustic guitars and occasional touches of piano, percussion, and lap steel. I keep wanting to overuse the word “soft” to describe their music, because that’s how it feels: like being wrapped in a cozy, warm blanket in a placed you feel safe. But don’t call it boring: their musicianship and artistry is subtle but present, and this is not just another alt.folk record.
Cancel your plans and be at The Camel at 8 p.m. sharp, or you’ll miss out on the sweet CD release-only deal: $10 will get you admission as well as copies of both the new album and James’ solo album (attendees who already own the CDs may pay $5 for admission alone). The show will also include acoustic sets by local musicians David Schultz, Josh Scolaro (of Brice Woodall and the Positrons), and Pete Appleby (of Memorial).
